FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

Material Selection & Design

Natural stone (such as flagstone, slate, or bluestone) offers timeless, organic beauty with unique variations in color and texture. Manufactured concrete pavers provide a clean, uniform look, extreme durability, and a wide array of engineered styles and colors. At Olliscapes, we install both to the highest industry standards.

Natural stone retains its color permanently, though it will develop a beautiful, natural patina over the years. Premium concrete pavers are manufactured with UV-resistant pigments. To lock in the rich colors and protect against the elements, we highly recommend applying a professional sealant after installation.

Given our frequent Portland rain, slip resistance is a top priority. We recommend textured concrete pavers or natural stones with a cleft finish, like flagstone or limestone. These surfaces provide excellent traction even during our wet winters.

Durability & Portland Weather
Moss and weeds love the Pacific Northwest climate. To combat this, Olliscapes uses premium polymeric sand to fill the joints between your stones or pavers. Once activated with water, this sand hardens like mortar, locking out wind-blown weed seeds and resisting moss growth while remaining flexible.
A hardscape is only as good as the foundation beneath it. Shifting and sinking happen when contractors cut corners on groundwork. Olliscapes prevents this by deeply excavating the site, laying a robust, compacted gravel sub-base, and ensuring flawless drainage to withstand heavy rain and winter frost cycles.
We meticulously engineer every project with a subtle, invisible slope—typically dropping one inch for every eight feet. This securely channels heavy Portland rainwater away from your home’s foundation and into designated drainage areas or your lawn.
Maintenance & Care
While not strictly mandatory, professional sealing is highly recommended. Applying a high-quality sealer every 3 to 5 years protects your investment from BBQ oil stains, food spills, UV damage, and joint sand erosion, making the surface much easier to clean.
For routine maintenance, a simple rinse with a garden hose or sweeping is all it takes. For deeper cleans, you can use mild dish soap and a stiff brush. Avoid using harsh chemical de-icers (like rock salt) in the winter, as they can pit and erode stone surfaces over time.
